What P0496 means
There’s a specific moment that tips off most P0496 cases before a scan tool ever gets involved: you fill the tank, start the car, and it stumbles. That’s the code talking. The EVAP system is supposed to hold fuel vapor in a charcoal canister and let the engine draw it in only when the computer says so. P0496 means it’s not waiting for permission — vapor is getting into the intake during a stretch when the purge valve was told to stay shut.
That’s the mirror image of the more common EVAP complaint. Most EVAP trouble is about flow that’s too low or blocked entirely, and it causes no driveability symptoms at all — you’d never know without a scanner. P0496 is flow that’s too high, or happening at the wrong time, and it’s often felt, not just measured. That’s actually useful. If you’re comparing notes with a mechanic, “it stumbles right after I fill up” narrows things down fast.
Why it’s almost always the purge valve
The purge valve is a solenoid — an electrically controlled gate — sitting in the hose between the charcoal canister and the intake. When it’s working, it opens only on command and seals tight the rest of the time. When it fails, the most common failure mode is mechanical: the internal seat wears or a bit of debris keeps it from closing all the way. Vacuum from the running engine then pulls vapor through continuously, whether the computer wants it or not.
A torn or disconnected hose downstream of the valve can produce the same code, since the computer is really just watching for unexpected flow and doesn’t always know which piece of the delivery system is the offender. That makes hose inspection worth five minutes before anyone commits to a new part. Less often, the valve’s solenoid coil shorts out internally and sticks the plunger open electrically rather than mechanically, or a wiring fault feeds it a signal it shouldn’t be getting. A misbehaving fuel tank pressure sensor rounds out the list, though that’s the least common path in.

What happens if it sits there
Unlike a lot of EVAP faults, this one isn’t something to shrug off indefinitely. A purge valve stuck open keeps feeding extra fuel vapor into the intake well past when the engine wants it, and that leans the mixture rich for longer than it should run. Rich running over time is hard on the catalytic converter, which is a far more expensive part to replace than the valve causing the problem. The car will also fail an emissions test with this code stored, so it’s not something you can quietly drive around forever even if it feels fine day to day.
None of that means panic. It means treating the hard-start-after-fill-up symptom as a prompt to get the valve checked in the next week or two, not the next six months.

Repair cost
A new purge valve typically runs $120–$350 installed, parts and labor included. If the real problem turns out to be just a cracked or disconnected hose, the fix can cost a lot less. Either way, it's worth resolving before a long-haul catalytic converter repair becomes the bigger bill.
